Spring 2007

CJA Network celebrates 5 year birthday!

Hello and welcome to the Spring 2007 issue of the Christian Jazz Artists Network Newsletter! The Christian Jazz Artists Network is now 5 years old! We are excited to see how our network continues to grow and how our artists celebrate their musical gifts! As Christians we also celebrate at this time of the year the risen Christ as Lord! We wish for everyone a wonderful Easter season!

I am a firm believer in Celebration! In fact, encouraging others to celebrate their musical gifts is one of the top priorities of the CJA Network!  As our community of jazz artists and fans continues to grow I am thrilled to see Christians celebrating their musical gifts by using jazz more and more in both church and secular settings! The Good News and the gift of jazz music is being shared and people are getting jazzed about it! - David Arivett CJA Network Founder

Celebrate Today and be Jazzed!

Many people assume that Christians live rather dull lives. Author Philip Yancey once observed that, “Rightly or wrongly, [many people] see us Christians as restrained, uptight, repressed—people less likely to celebrate vitality than to wag our fingers in disapproval.”  Where did we get the reputation for being party poopers? Answer... from the party pooper mentality much like the elder son had in the Prodigal Son story! Everybody was celebrating and dancing to the music except for him!

St. Iraneus said, “The glory of God is a man fully alive.” Jesus himself was a man fully alive. He loved good company, good food and good times which would have included music and dancing (see Luke 7:31-36).  What Would Jesus Do???  Jesus celebrated life. So, why aren't we His followers celebrating??? Read more>>>

Attention Instrumentalists! - Big Phat Band Contest!!

Gordon Goodwin is one of the premier Hollywood writers these days and his "Big Phat Band" has become quite prolific as one of the top big bands out there made up of all the best Hollywood studio players.  Gordon has a contest on his website - you download an MP3 of his band playing the solo section from one of his tunes - without the soloist. You record your own solo over his tracks, and upload it for all to hear. Finalists are determined by the number of "thumbs up" votes a solo gets. Winner of the finalists gets their solo on the next Big Phat Band recording. Anyway - ya, a little crazy - but it's all fun, and if you've never heard this band, you're in for a REAL treat.  More info here!

Great Quote for Easter...

"So many people claim to believe in the Resurrection, and yet it means so little to them. It has no effect in their lives. It is not enough to celebrate Easter and say “Christ is risen!” Indeed, it is useless to proclaim it at all, unless at the same time we can say that we too have risen." -- C. F. Blumhardt

 Rev. Lowell Grisham

 2 Timothy 2:14-26

"...avoid wrangling over words...  Avoid profane chatter...   Have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.  And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome..."

It is obvious that the congregation to which the letter titled 2 Timothy is addressed is a congregation in conflict. With warnings and encouragement the author tells them to stop their complaining and conflicts.

A friend of mine who is a pastor showed me her wristband yesterday.  It is a purple wristband that says "no complaints" (or words to that effect).  Another pastor in Kansas City came up with the idea.  You wear the band on your arm as a reminder not to complain.  The challenge is to go 21 days without complaining.  If you catch yourself griping, you move the wrist band from one arm to the other and start the count again.  On the website of the congregation that started the "no complaints" wristbands they list the names of 20 members who have successfully accomplished 21 days without complaint.

It's a very Benedictine idea.  In his famous rule for communities, Benedict had much to say about grumbling.  He's against it.  Maya Angelou is often quoted for her saying, "If you don't like something, change it.  If you can't change it, change your attitude.  Don't complain
