Alex Acuna

Alex Acuña, a Peruvian drummer and percussionist, is widely known as a gifted musician, producer, composer and clinician. For the last 40 years, Alex has been exciting fans with his innovative and amazing grooves played with pure heart. A combination of his South American and Caribbean roots and his understanding of contemporary music, from Jazz to Pop, make him one of the most accomplished and complete musicians today.

To say that Alex Acuna is a phenomenal drummer and percussionist would be a huge understatement! Between 1975 and 1977, he made part of jazz history when he became both drummer and percussionist for one of the most innovative and pioneering jazz groups of our time, Weather Report. He first performed as percussionist (October 1975  to April 1976), and later as drummer (April 1976 to October 1977). He recorded two albums with the group:"Black Market" (1976) and the highly successful "Heavy Weather" (1977), which included the famous tracks "Birdland" and "Havona." "Heavy Weather" became the first jazz-fusion album to sell a million copies. His countless album credits include such diverse artist as U2, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Sergio Mendes, Yellow Jackets, Chic Corea, Julio Iglesias, Koinonia, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Placido Domingo, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and many more. Todd Billingsley & Causeway

Todd Billingsley is indeed a multi-talented and versatile musician.  Todd has his own worship resource company, and has many excellent charts and resources for worship ( including the Causeway charts!)  Not only is Todd a keyboard player and arranger extraordinaire but Todd has also produced two of the finest CD's containing Jazz  arrangements of  Hymns! The group name is Causeway –  and they put their contemporary spin of jazz, samba, guajira, and even a little mambo with favorite hymns of yesterday.  Billingsley sought out five studio musicians from the South Florida area that shared a strong faith in God and a passion for music!  Rey Sánchez, (music director and producer for Sony artists Cheyenne and Braulio;) Fofi Lancha,( drummer for the TV show Sabado Gigante); Ken Kosicki, (bass player who has toured with Wayne Watson); and Ed Maina,( sax player who has toured with Natalie Cole and Frank Sinatra). With the addition of percussionist, Cookie Lopez., (who had just finished touring with Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine!)

Their signature of " smooth-yet-hot " blend of contemporary jazz and Latin music is indeed hot! Causeway has released two CDs – the first was the self-entitled Causeway released in 1996, and the second Unconditional Love Jazz in 2001.

Cyrus Chestnut

Cyrus began his musical career at the age of six, playing piano at his hometown Baptist Church in Baltimore. He continued studies at Peabody University and then graduated from Berklee College Of Music. He then began working as a side man for Terence Blanchard, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillepsie, Donald Harrison, and many others. He also worked with vocalists Jon Hendricks, Joe Williams, and Betty Carter.

Besides working as a sideman, as a leader he has released many great recordings! In 2001 he released, "Soul Food" featuring Christian McBride, drummer Lewis Nash and special guests James Carter, Stefon Harris, Wycliffe Gordon, and Marcus Printup.  This recording was included in DownBeat magazines list of best recordings in 2002 and ascended to the "top ten" on the jazz charts! He has also played with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Dizzy Gillepsie Big Band, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra.

Cyrus continually tours with his trio, playing live at Jazz festivals around the world as well as clubs and concerts. As he describes, " I'm trying to bring the spirit of joy to as many places as possible!"  Cyrus shares, "my latest CD, "You Are My Sunshine", is an attempt to dig deep into the spiritual forces that drives music". Music needs to be enjoyed," Chestnut continues. "Pure pleasure is important"!

Review of Cyrus Chestnut's, "Blessed Quietness"

"It is a wonderful thing when the skill in a musician's hands is wedded to affection for God in his heart. Cyrus Chestnut brings that powerful combination to the keyboard, and it is most evident in this recording.

Blessed Quietness has it all: boisterous exultation in God's glory, quiet adoration of God's beauty, thoughtful contemplation of God's love, pleas for God's mercy and help, playful frolics in God's joy. That Cyrus Chestnut can say all this so clearly through a piano says a lot about his hands, mind, and heart. Listening to him play is a distinct pleasure.

Lest non-Christians think, based on what I've written so far, there isn't anything here for them, I will say this: there's plenty of flat-out good jazz here that anyone can enjoy. The devil doesn't have all the good music, you know. And if this recording is any indication, God still has the very best music!"

Grady Nichols

Grady Nichols

Grady Nichols truly personifies today's hip Smooth Jazz / Instrumental Pop scene. With four solo CDs to his credit, Grady has been described as, “the awesome new sax player for the millennium” by legendary fusion jazz great Jeff Lorber.

In his new release “Sophistication”, Grady has taken his musical appeal to a new level by enlisting the talents of not only Lorber, who produced and co-wrote the CD, but also Chris Botti (trumpet), Ray Fuller (guitar) and Paul Pesco (rhythm guitar). Grammy Award winner Paul Brown mixed the CD. “I have been very blessed to have had the unique opportunity of working with such a talented variety of artists.”

This CD reflects a different side of Grady. “This project was put together over a long period and during two major life-changing events – getting married and having a child. There is a culmination of many different emotions throughout and I hope people will feel that when they hear the music. There is a flow to this record as it weaves from the funky to the seductive. It’s my best studio project to date.”

Grady's 2001 release, "In the Fullness of Time", is a spiritual CD featuring Bill Champlin, keyboardist / vocalist of the group Chicago, alongside a 50 voice choir. The CD was recorded before a live studio audience and aired on television as "Grady Nichols Live". It shows the diversity of Grady's sound and stage presentation using elements of jazz, reggae, Latin, blues and gospel. Coinciding with the CD’s release, Grady appeared before 30,000 at the World Pulse Festival in South Bend, Indiana, with acts such as Point of Grace, DC Talk, Plus One and Salvador.

Renowned for his signature interpretation of "Amazing Grace", Grady had the humble honor of performing on the "Hour of Power" at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California in September 2001 following the devastating terrorist attacks. This was Grady's second appearance, as he remains the only saxophonist to be featured before this worldwide audience. Grady has also performed his stirring rendition at the National Clergy Appreciation Day in Washington, D.C.

Phillip DeGreg

Phil DeGreg began playing the piano as a child and now performs internationally. A native of Cincinnati, he completed a degree in psychology from Yale University before becoming a professional musician. In addition, DeGreg earned a master's degree at the University of North Texas, and subsequently toured for a year with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd.  DeGreg's jazz festival appearances include the North Sea, Pori, Monterey, Montreux, Brecon, Wigan, and Elkhart Jazz Festivals. He has performed in clubs and concerts throughout the United States, and in the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Brazil.

Phil DeGreg was named one of the 10 finalists in Jazziz Magazine's "Keyboardists on Fire" competition in 1995. For the last 12 years, DeGreg has been the house pianist at Cincinnati's famous Blue Wisp Jazz Club, performing with many notable jazz artists, including Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Zoot Simms, Junior Cook, Bobby Watson, Mark Murphy and Stanley Turrentine. DeGreg is dedicated to sharing his love of jazz through teaching.  He also plays piano on Sundays at his church.

Phil is currently Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, teaching jazz theory, arranging, piano, and ensembles. He has taught for the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops since 1982. DeGreg has presented lectures to the International Association of Jazz Educators, the National Group Piano Teachers Association, the Ohio Music Educator's Association, the Ohio Music Teachers Association, and the Music Teachers National Association. In 1995 DeGreg published "Jazz Keyboard Harmony," a chord voicing method written for non-pianists and beginning jazz pianists, which is now used at universities in the U.S. and Europe.

Besides four recordings as a leader for JCurve Records : "Whirl Away" (2000) featuring Don Braden, "The Green Gate" (1998), "Table For Three" (1996) and "Hand Gliding" (1992), Phil has two new CD releases.

"Hymnprovisation" is a recording featuring Jazz renditions of hymns and praise songs. Phil  demonstrates on this CD his arranging mastery, jazz voicings, and technique as he provides a variety of twists and surprises to church hymns and worship songs!

"Brasilia" is a wonderful Brazilian flavored jazz recording. DeGreg traveled last year to Brazil to cut a record with four artists who are well-known in their own country: Moisés Alves, André Vasconcellos, Erivelton Silva and Leander Motta. This combination of musicians produced a chemistry and music that is absolutely delightful!

 John Carlson

Saxophone is John Carlson's main axe but he also plays keyboards. John is also an incredible arranger and producer. Here is what Norm Stockton (Bassist & Clinician, Maranatha! Music) had to say about John's music.

"John demonstrates a keen understanding of true musicality. Way beyond mere cool licks, he is one of the most expressive & emotive players with whom I've had the pleasure to work. He possesses that rare ability to discern when NOT to play, as well. John is a fantastic & ultra-talented musician."

Preludes II features a special guest appearance by jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum in a duet with John Carlson         on his arrangement of "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands." And the horn charts are smokin'!

Gary Meggs

Gary Meggs had a passion for music at an early age. By the time he was eleven, Gary had already learned to play the saxophone and the piano, and was always willing to sing or perform for those who would listen. Throughout his school years he continued performing at schools, teen centers and private parties. By the time he was 21 Gary had graduated from Henderson State University with a degree in music and was looking forward to becoming an accomplished professional musician. Gary’s aspirations of becoming a professional musician were put on hold however, when he was called into teaching and began a career as a performer/band director. His love for students set him on a path of preparing young people for a future in music while allowing him to continue his career as a performer.

Performing with well known musical groups and performers such as the Four Tops, the Temptations, Barbara Eden, Don Rickles, the Lennon Sisters, and Mickey Gilley gave Gary the opportunity to continue to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician. This experience, along with being the featured saxophonist with the 106th Army Band, 531st Air Force Band, and many public school and college jazz bands has allowed Gary to build up a base of supporters that have grown to love and enjoy his musical talent.

Gary is currently the saxophone instructor, director of bands and jazz band instructor at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. After many years of teaching, performing and recording Gary is still dedicated to instilling the love of music into his students. In his own life however, he has begun a new musical journey...a journey to live and play his music for God and share the good news message everywhere he plays or sings!

Denver & The Mile High Orchestra

It  may not be the 1930's, but when Denver and the Mile High Orchestra take the stage, the audience is taken back to a time when big band was in full swing! But this is not just a bunch of kids playing garage rock with horns masquerading as a retro band. This is the real deal-well educated and highly skilled musicians filling the bandstand and delivering a massive sound unlike anything previously recorded in the contemporary Christian industry.

As a backing musician on Christafari's studio recordings and their "Valley of Decision" tour, Denver Bierman realized his calling to pioneer another vintage genre. Denver and his Mile High Orchestra were formed at Belmont University in Nashville, TN (former stomping grounds of the likes of Steven Curtis Chapman). Although they began during the resurgence of swing, their multi-genre musical presentation exceeds far beyond a mere passing fad. It is big band music played by a BIG band (12-15 on stage). With a little R&B, a dash of Rockabilly, a touch of Dixieland, and even some Latin influence, this high energy dance band wails syncopated horn lines with complex harmonies and features the essential jazz-rooted element of true improvisation.

A tremendous horn section that can scream notes a mile high leads this compelling jazz orchestra. With trumpet in hand, reminiscent of the great Louis Armstrong, Denver sings unadorned vocals, influenced by vintage crooners such as Harry Connick Jr., Brian Setzer, and Frank Sinatra. His music defies standard age demographics reaching both the old and young alike. For some, Denver's sound is a step into the past while for others, it is an introduction to a new musical dimension.

The Mile High Orchestra band members have collectively played for some of the biggest names in music including: Carmen, Truth, Jaqui Velasquez, Sandi Pattie, Debbie Boone, Chet Atkins, Ron Kenoly, Benny Goodman Tribute Orchestra, Phil Driscol,
Lu Lu Roman, Dan Akeroid, Tower of Power, Guy Lombardo, Ralph Carmichael,
Ben Peterson, Jonathon Pierce, Wes Montgomery, Greg Long, and Christafari.

If you've listened intently to any television commercials lately, you've heard big band music. This style is growing in popularity and this is the only nationally marketed Christian group performing and recording in the big band style with a distinctly Christian message. Anyone wanting a Christian alternative in this genre will be looking for this group.

Over the past two years, Denver has created quite a buzz in the industry, playing festivals, showcases and conferences. Performances have included the "Best of the Best Showcase" at the legendary Ryman Auditorium, Billy Graham pre-crusade rallies in Nashville, and the Lifeway single's pastors conference (NASAM) in Washington D.C. D&MHO gained worldwide attention playing five shows in Salt Lake City, Utah during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and has already been scheduled to play for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. The band has earned standing ovations and rave reviews for their powerful stage show and profound Christian lyrics.

Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quartet

Presbybop Music is a musical venture of Bill Carter, jazz pianist and Presbyterian minister.

After years of pretending to split the life of faith from the music of jazz, Bill has been trying to find links between the two halves of his brain. Presbybop Music is his attempt to integrate his strong Presbyterian faith with the rhythms and music of bebop.

In 1993 he formed the Presbybop Quartet with Al Hamme, his college music professor from Binghamton University.  Together with drummer Tom Whaley and bassist Tony Marino, the band has been turning heads on the musical scene - and adding new dimensions to the faith and worship of the Christian church.

Based in northeastern Pennsylvania, this group of consummate professionals has presented concerts and jazz worship services in churches around the country.  Their music has been widely acclaimed. To date, Bill's Presbybop Quartet has recorded four compact discs: Faith in a New Key, Dancing Day, Fragile Incarnation, and Stand On Your Head.

Bill Carter spends most of his time as a busy pastor in a bustling church. Yet he keenly senses that God wants him to use his musical gifts as a means of reaching people with the good news of God's grace, peace, and joy. His jazz ministry has received national recognition, and has served as a model for integrating the arts in Christian ministry.

Chad Lawson Trio

In the spring of 2001, the Chad Lawson Trio was born. With Lawson on piano, Zack Page on bass, and Al Sergel on drums, this unique combination of talented and spiritual musicians has enjoyed a very special connection between jazz music and spirituality.

The piano trio in jazz music is as much a tradition as the art form of jazz music itself. Whether it is Enroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, or Keith Jarrett - there is plenty of music to be made by this combination of piano, bass, and drums. The Chad Lawson Trio is a group that follows in this tradition with one foot in the past and one foot in the future!

Chad Lawson studied at Berklee College of Music. His debut release was hailed as,"one of the favorites of the year", by the Gavin report. The album charted nationally and had rotation on over 300 stations. Chad has studied with Donald Brown, Fred Hersch, and Laszio Gardony.

How is their Christian faith expressed in their music? "People see you for who you are," Lawson says. "They'd rather have service, than lip service."

"Our ministry is our lives,"  drummer Al Sergel adds. "Our music is the extension of our lives, played out for the audience to view. I'm on part-time staff as a worship leader at my church. There are similarities between our concerts and worship.

The humility of their faith is expressed in their lives and music. It's also expressed in the dedication on their CD cover: "Thank God for His Son, life, creativity and constant inspiration."

Review

"Whether you're a jazz aficianado, a member of the church choir, or just a lover of good music, "Ornament of the Universe" is a wonderful CD that you will enjoy. But more than that... as a musician myself, I just have to say how profoundly inspirational this recording is to me. Alex Acuña... who can forget his legendary performances with Weather Report? His drumming was one of the reasons I fell in love with music in the first place, and to hear him, and Abe Laboriel, Bill Maxwell, Loston Harris and others together backing up Fletch is a super musical gem!" JAZZIZ Magazine Review of Jay's CD, "Beyond Words".

"A worship service may seem like an unlikely place to hear smooth jazz, but when guitarist Jay Leach stood at the altar of Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles one recent Sunday morning, playing plucky acoustic melodies to a DAT track, the faithful couldn't help but say "Amen!" Leach gathers a handful of the genre's finest Christian musicians -- Justo Almario, Abe Laboriel, Alex Acuna, and Kirk Whalum -- for an eclectic praise-and-jam session on Beyond Words (Playlist), providing scripture to meditate on in the liner notes as one listens to a blend of electric funk and string-section-enhanced acoustic solos. While Leach's quiet eloquence on hymns like "Amazing Grace" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" might make great background music for quiet times (in prayer or peaceful meditation), secular smooth-jazz fans are more likely to dig into the bursts of energy found on the swaying funk of "Holy Holy Holy (Hosanna)." On that track, Leach duets on acoustic with a synth-horn section, then engages in a call-and-response on the electric with Whalum's aggressive sax. On "Walkin' the Walk," Leach (on electric) and Whalum seem to battle over who can praise with the most passion. Leach offers a laid-back Latin vibe on the gently percussive "Festejo," a bright, little opportunity to duet with Almario's fluttering-leaf flute style. Overall, this is more fun than any church service you've ever been to."

Todd Johnson

Todd Johnson is recognized as a pioneer of the six-string bass. With his custom Yamaha six-string bass, equipped with a midi pick-up, Johnson uses an innovative technique where he plays chord changes and bass lines simultaneously. Additionally his use of the midi interface, a technology that allows his instrument to sound like many instruments at the same time, adds both harmonic color and texture that further defines his unique sound. Bass Player magazine's Ed Friedland says, "Todd can simultaneously swing like Ray Brown and accompany like organist Jimmy Smith."

As an integral member of the critically acclaimed jazz trio of guitarist Ron Escheté, Johnson excels as both a supporting musician and a seasoned soloist. He is consistently cited for his contributions of skill, originality, and versatility, as well as his ability to sound as if he is simultaneously playing multiple instruments. Group leader Ron Escheté says "Todd . . . can sound like a second guitar player or even an organ or electric piano." Zan Stewart of the Los Angeles Times writes that Johnson's six-string bass along with Escheté s seven-string guitar "give the musicians an amazing range of sounds and approaches." The group is repeatedly hailed as the trio that sounds like a quartet.

Since joining forces with Ron Escheté, Johnson has recorded 5 CDs with the trio, including their latest effort entitled Live at Rocco. The trio has performed at numerous festivals, concerts and club dates throughout the United States. Johnson has recently completed his first solo CD entitled A Solo Offering.

In addition to his work with the Ron Escheté Trio, Johnson has performed and recorded with other artists, including Mike Stern, Dave Weckl, Scott Henderson, Plas Johnson, Sam Most, Joe LaBarbera, Poncho Sanchez, Paul Humphrey, and Frank Gambale.

As a seasoned performing artist, Todd Johnson has developed a rich philosophy encompassing his spiritual, educational and achievement-oriented sides. Johnson sees his talent as a gift to continually enhance and develop.
