Connects people through rhythm, laughter, and awareness - Coy Theobolt True North Training and Consulting

Body Beat is an innovative card deck for educational, recreational, and corporate groups. The 36 sound cards can be used to make six different games for anywhere from 4 to 70 people. There are SURPRISE cards that will get your group loosened up, like the "Go Wild" cards. There are also some SERIOUS cards that will give the rebels a responsible role, like the "Beat Keeper" cards.

Body Beat does not require any musical experience. In fact, there are no notes or time signatures to read. The five simple body percussion sounds make different rhythms that sound GREAT together and inspire your group to groove.

Each card uses five body percussion sounds:

  • Snap (your fingers)

  • Clap (your hands)

  • Whap (your belly)

  • Lap (tap your lap)

  • Tap (your feet.)

UpBeat Drum Circles was founded on the principle that music should be valued not only as a mode of entertainment, but as an active methodology for achieving change in individuals, teams and communities. We use drums because they are the most accessible instrument. Everyone can drum. Our programs are aimed at creating a musically accessible culture, where musical expression is seen as a tool for personal transformation and development. (see Creating a Musically Accessible Culture).

We believe that today’s world has a need for innovative programs to help us respect differences, work together at our highest potential, and create health and balance in our personal lives. We have researched the recipe for possible change and discovered that a successful program combines the following key elements…

  • Experiential learning.
  • Expression.
  • Communication.
  • Fun.
  • Stress-reduction
  • Metaphors for Change
  • Reflection
  • Challenge

The drum circle adds a key ingredient, creating an experience in collaborative creativity that is as old as the first tribes that sat in circles while drumming and chanting to achieve a higher state of community and individual expression. Our mission is to weave together ancient wisdom and practice of music making with the modern knowledge of human development.

Part of the UpBeat Philosophy is that everyone is musical!

Drums somehow overcome all the things that stop people from making music.
We may turn away, but the primal beat just keeps on calling."

- Christine Stevens, Fort Collins Forum

A Recreational Music-Making Program

HealthRHYTHMS is a new division within Remo Inc. that develops and provides materials, programs, training and the latest research supporting the use of drumming as an effective means for promoting and maintaining health and well-being.

Alongside Traditional Medicine

Our efforts are intended to serve as the impetus for hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, senior centers, nursing homes and insurers to integrate group drumming as a valuable intervention within traditional medicine. These organizations have an exceptional opportunity to offer a unique activity that combines proven health-promoting strategies including self-expression, group support, nurturing, exercise, stress reduction and of course, music making.

Biological Benefits of Drumming

HealthRHYTHMS is on the forefront of establishing a solid foundation for proving the biological benefits of drumming. Neurologist Barry Bittman, M.D. and his renowned research team discovered that a specific group drumming approach significantly increased the disease fighting activity of circulating white blood cells (Natural Killer cells) that seek out and destroy cancer cells and virally-infected cells. Along with conventional medical strategies, Dr. Bittman includes group drumming in all of his disease-based programs at the Mind-Body Wellness Center.

"It's time to stop thinking of the drum as just a musical instrument. Start thinking of it as a unifying tool for every family, a wellness tool for every retiree, and an educational tool for every classroom."
