New CJA Network Member Jazz
Pianist Cyrus Chestnut! Cyrus
Chestnut
began his musical career at the age
of six, playing piano at his hometown Baptist Church
in Baltimore. He continued studies at Peabody
University and then graduated from Berklee College
Of Music. He then began working as a side man for
Terence Blanchard, Wynton and Branford Marsalis,
Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillepsie, Donald Harrison, and
many others. He also worked with vocalists Jon
Hendricks, Joe Williams, and Betty Carter.
Besides
working as a sideman, as a leader he has released
many great recordings! In 2001 he released,
"Soul Food" featuring Christian McBride,
drummer Lewis Nash and special guests James Carter,
Stefon Harris, Wycliffe Gordon, and Marcus Printup.
This recording was included in DownBeat magazines
list of best recordings in 2002 and ascended to the
"top ten" on the jazz charts! He has also
played with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The
Dizzy Gillepsie Big Band, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz
Orchestra.
Cyrus
continually tours with his trio, playing live at
Jazz festivals around the world as well as clubs and
concerts. As he describes, " I'm trying to
bring the spirit of joy to as many places as
possible!" Cyrus shares, "my latest
CD, "You Are My Sunshine", is an attempt
to dig deep into the spiritual forces that drive
music. I believe that God has given me this
wonderful gift of music, and that I am in charge
with the task of sharing this gift with as many
people as possible. So, from the church-house to the
bar-house, from the symphony hall to Sonny's
Showcase Lounge down in the hood, this task was
given to me and hopefully people will be inspired
and influenced in a very unique way." CyrusChestnut.com

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Devotional
Thomas
Merton
"From
the rising of the sun to the going down of the sun the
name of the Lord is to be praised!"
Sunrise:
hidden by pines and cedars to the east, I saw the red
flame of the kingly sun glaring through the black trees,
not like dawn but like a forest fire. Then the sun
became distinguished as a person, and he shone silently
and with solemn power through the branches, and the
whole world was silent and calm.
Sunrise:
it is an event that calls forth solemn music in the very
depths of man’s nature, as if one’s whole being had
to attune itself to the cosmos and praise God for the
new day, praise him in the name of all the creatures
that ever were or will ever be. I look at the rising sun
and feel that now upon me falls the responsibility of
seeing what all my ancestors have seen…praising God
before me. Whether or not they praised him then,
for themselves, they must praise him now in me. When the
sun rises each one of us is summoned by the living and
the dead to praise God.
"From
the rising of the sun to the going down of the sun the
name of the Lord is to be praised!"
Why
Not Be Jazzed?
It's
always a good day, as long as your breathin,
It's
always a good day, as long as your swingin',
So
why not be jazzed, so why not be jazzed about life?
It's
always a good day, as long as your vertical,
It's
always a good day, as long as your not too critical,
So
why not be jazzed and show some pizzazz about life?
So
why not be jazzed, so why not be jazzed about life?
(Lyrics
by David Arivett)
