Devotional
“In
repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness
and trust is your strength, but you would have none of
it.” Isaiah 30:15
Here
the prophet tells us to be quiet and calm, to have
patience and hope. Anyone who learns to be tranquil,
trusting, and unruffled in the midst of affliction
will find his way and will be helped, as the prophet
says. His eyes will be more open, his feelings more
sober. He will see where there is a little opening for
him to slip through, which he could not see and find
as long as he restlessly stormed and raged in his
agitation.
I
often compare this with wasps I once saw in a
vineyard. There were little white bottles hanging on
the stalks, open above and covered with sugar or
honey. The wasps, attracted by the sweetness, got
stuck in the bottle. Why? Because once inside they got
so frantic in trying to escape through the glass that
they lost their heads, so to speak, and even forgot
the opening above, where they could easily have found
their way out without any trouble. But not one could
get out; they perished inside the glass. Then I
thought, “That’s how man is in his
restlessness.” He always wants to run his head
against a wall and does not see where it will get him.
The restless spirit makes him blind and stupid; he
loses his way, and has only himself to blame.
By
being quiet and trusting, the prophet says, you will
be strong. A quiet spirit can rise up again and look
upward to our God with more confidence and courage.
Johann
Christoph Blumhardt from, "He Sent His
Word."
